VCUarts Theatre and The Conciliation Project To Present 'WHITESPLAINING'

VCUarts Theatre and local social justice theatre company The Conciliation Project will present an original devised piece titled "WHITESPLAINING," directed by Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, Ph.D. The ensemble intentionally interrogates whiteness, white supremacy and white culture through the transformative power of story. Using satire, story, anecdotes, commentary, music and dance, "WHITESPLAINING" unpacks cultural “norms” and the mythology surrounding racism and white privilege. Performances will be staged in The Basement, 300 E. Broad St., Sept. 9-18.

VCU Alumni and Community Bike Ride

The VCU Alumni Riding Rams and VCU Recreation and Well-Being will host the fall VCU Alumni and Community Bike Ride. Gather for a meet-and-greet breakfast at 8 a.m. The ride begins at 9 a.m. at the Cary Street Gym, 101 S. Linden St. with routes to be determined later (minimum of 25 miles). The event includes SAG vehicle support, cue sheets, complimentary pre-ride bike maintenance provided by VCU RecWell and a midride rest stop. The ride is limited to cyclists 18 or older, and participants must wear a helmet.

VCU to Conduct Test of Emergency Communications Wednesday (Sept. 7)
VCU will conduct a full test of its emergency communications and alerting systems, including sirens throughout the Monroe Park and MCV campuses at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The full test will include the sirens along with text messages, Alertus boxes, mass email, digital signs, desktop alerts, LiveSafe, VCU Mobile, social media and VCU website information — all part of a multichannel system for communicating emergency information to VCU students, faculty, staff, visitors and the community. VCU Police will send out a text message to let the community know that all testing has concluded.

VCU's Athletics Department is looking for students to assist with weekly game day and facility operations. Research Participation Opportunity: Race and Racism in the United States
If eligible, you will complete three surveys over the course of 10 months. Each survey consists of a series of measures, including those that are designed to assess your attitudes and beliefs, past experiences and future intentions, and demographic information and takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. Recreation and Well-Being Lifeguard Certification
Learn the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent aquatic emergencies and increase your critical thinking and decision-making skills. This course is offered in the Blended Learning format and will require seven to eight hours of online pre-course work. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, First Aid and Administering Emergency Oxygen, valid for two years. VCU Adobe Creative Jam Coming Oct. 31-Nov. 4
Adobe will host a Creative Jam event for VCU students Oct. 31-Nov. 4. Participants will learn specific Adobe applications from an Adobe expert, then work in teams to complete a "creative" challenge. Smoking Reduction Study for African American Menthol Smokers
Adults who smoke menthol cigarettes and identify as Black/African American are invited to participate in a study that involves electronic cigarette use for six weeks to reduce their smoking. Participants must be willing to visit the study site, receive phone calls and respond to texts or surveys. Compensation is provided. Black Love Safe Love
This is a research study aiming to receive feedback on a sexual health intervention designed for couples. To be eligible to participate, you have to identity as Black or African American and be 18 to 35 years of age. The study requires participation in a 120-minute session and completion of a questionnaire. Compensation is available.
