Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) Update

The Virginia Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) has updated its Policy 4.20 – Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) applicable to state employees, including all VCU faculty and staff. Effective Jan. 10, 2023, the policy changes the 12-month measurement period for determining eligibility for Family and Medical leave from the fixed 12-month period to a rolling 12-month period. A summary of this change: 12-month period for determining Family and Medical Leave Eligibility. Current: Amount of FMLA taken in the current fixed leave year Jan. 10-Jan. 9. New (effective Jan. 10, 2023): Amount of FMLA taken in the 12 months prior to the requested period of FMLA. Under the new policy, a new maximum period of FMLA eligibility will no longer become automatically available at the beginning of the leave year on Jan. 10. FMLA eligibility will be determined throughout the year by FMLA taken within the 12 months prior to the requested period of FMLA.

Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign Begins

The 2022 campaign season has begun and is celebrating 25 years of giving and volunteerism. CVC is the only annual workplace giving program for the Commonwealth’s workforce and offers employees approximately 700-plus screened charities to support. Mail Services Winter Hours

Mail Services will close early on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and all day Thursday and Friday, Nov. 24 and 25 and reopen on Monday, Nov. 28. Locations will be open on Thursday, Dec. 22 and Tuesday through Thursday, Dec. 27-29 from 10 a.m.-noon on the Monroe Park Campus, 8 a.m.-noon at VMI and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Ownby location. Departments receiving pickup and delivery services must contact Mail Services in writing or by email to request services during the winter closing. Otherwise, mail deliveries will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023. See the "Special Hours of Operation" memo for more information.

Smoking Reduction Study for African American Menthol Smokers

Adults who smoke menthol cigarettes and identify as Black/African American are invited to participate in a study that involves electronic cigarette use for six weeks to reduce their smoking. Participants must be willing to visit the study site, receive phone calls and respond to texts and surveys. Compensation is provided.
