Smithsonian Curator To Share Insights on Impact and Meaning of Black Music in American Life

Music, the great equalizer, plays a crucial role in shaping the human experience and preserving the history of that experience. African American music originated from a heritage shaped by the transatlantic slave trade and forced enslavement. This music was a means of survival and an agent of social change. Explore the history and impact of Black music in VCU Libraries annual Black History Month Lecture with Dwandalyn Reece, Ph.D., visionary curator and author. Opening Night: 'School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play'

"School Girls" is a biting comedy that follows Paulina and her squad of minions as they compete for the Miss Ghana pageant in 1986. According to a review by the New York Times, "The nasty-teen comedy genre emerges wonderfully refreshed and even deepened by its immersion in a world it never considered.” Performances will be Thursday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 26 at W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, 922 Park Ave. Department mainstages have been designed and built by theater undergraduate students. Tickets are $10 for VCU students, faculty and staff.

Spring '23 Season Premiere: 'So It Appears'

In Remembrance of Adam: Rams Against Hazing

The Furthering Our Understanding Of Diet (F.O.O.D.) Study invites Black students to participate in one of two online surveys that seek to understand factors that influence their food choices.
