VCU's Department of Mathematics will present Classical and Modern Invariant of Knots in Room 4169, Grace E. Harris Hall, 1015 Floyd Ave. Kirsten Hendricks, Ph.D., Rutgers University, will introduce knot theory and discuss classical invariants of knots and what kind of geometric information they detect. A modern invariant called Heegaard Floer knot homology from the early 2000s will be introduced, including its properties and relationship to classical invariant. VCU Opera and Symphony will present Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" at the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, 922 Park Ave. It concerns the search for truth and reason, love and enlightenment. As an allegory, the opera follows the adventures of Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina. Set in ancient Egypt, Mozart's masterpiece underscores childlike simplicity, emotional complexity, dark foreboding and hilarious comedy. The free production will also be performed at 4 p.m. April 30.

This course will prepare participants to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. Courses include Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim and Safety Training for Swim Coaches. This blended learning course contains a combination of digital and in-person instruction. Online training must be completed prior to participating in the in-person skills sessions. Classes will be held May 23-June 8 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-4 p.m.
