A Message From VCU's Safety and Risk Management Occupational Safety Team

Over 23 percent of employee injuries at VCU are attributed to slips, trips and falls. It's the top cause of injury at the university. Common causes are spills, ice, snow, rain, loose mats/rugs, stepladders, poor lighting and clutter. These incidents may cause severe injuries. Here are some tips for staying safe: If you see something that you could slip or trip on, remove the hazard or tell someone who can. Clean up spills. Clear walkways, stairs, office space and lobbies. Make sure mats/rugs are lying flat. Watch where you are walking. Use stairway handrails. Walk slowly in adverse conditions. Heed warning signs. Use ladders/stepladders safely. Never lean over the sides of a ladder/stepladder. Always maintain three points of contact while using a ladder/stepladder.
