In this virtual talk hosted by VCU's Humanities Research Center, Christopher Brooks, Ph.D., will discuss his new book, "Tales of Koehler Hollow: An African American Family in Rural Appalachia," which recounts the story of Amy Finney and her descendants. Amy, a formerly enslaved Black woman, gained her freedom and established a homestead in the Appalachian mountains during a time in American history when she was dehumanized for the color of her skin and devalued for being female. Visiting Artist Sam Vernon To Give Lecture

VCU's Department of Painting + Printmaking will host a lecture by visiting artist Sam Vernon at the Grace Street Theater, 934 W. Grace St. Vernon is a visual artist who earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University. Her installations combine Xeroxed drawings, photographs, paintings and sculptural components in an exploration of personal narrative and identity.

VCU Integrated Neurosciences Symposium

RecWell Intramural Sports Indoor Soccer and Pickleball Tournaments
VCU RecWell Intramural Sports runs leagues and tournaments for all experience levels. Registration is currently open for November 5v5 Indoor Soccer and 2v2 Pickleball Tournaments. Participants Sought for Fine Motor Writing and Drawing Study
This research is being done to investigate how you learn new movements with your non-dominant hand. You will be asked to complete a tracing game on a touchscreen tablet while wearing an electrode cap. You must be right-handed and between the ages of 18 and 40 to participate. $20 compensation is available for your participation. The study takes about one hour. The study will take place in the research laboratory location in the VCU College of Health Professions building, 900 E. Leigh St.

Participants Are Invited for Study Examining the Impact of Acute and Chronic Stress on Cardiovascular Health
Individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who identify as Black or African American are invited to participate in a research study examining the effect of acute and chronic stress on cardiovascular and inflammation responses to an acute mental challenge. Raffle drawings for financial compensation will be conducted. This study will take place at 500 Academic Centre on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus. Seeking Students Who Identify as AAPI and/or First Gen for a Research Study About Safe Spaces at VCU
We are a VCU research team conducting research about Safe Spaces at VCU from the perspective of first-generation and AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) students. We are recruiting students who identify as first-generation and/or AAPI students to participate in a remote interview (via Zoom). The interview will require 30-60 minutes of your time. The online interview will be recorded so that researchers can keep track of what you've said. Neither your name nor any other identifying information will be associated with the recording. Only the research team will be able to review the recordings. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. If you are willing and are eligible to participate, you will receive a $25 egift card in compensation for your time and effort.
