2024 Gulak Lecture: Car-Optional Neighborhoods for the New Era

Victor Dover, urban designer and town planner and a Fellow with the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP), will present strategies to reimagine and design neighborhoods that prioritize people over cars. Dover will explore the growing movement to reduce car dependence in cities and share his top 10 ingredients for creating car-optional neighborhoods that are livable, beautiful and environmentally responsible. Lane and Sidewalk Closures on East Broad Street Nov. 1-3 (Friday-Sunday) and Nov. 8-10 (Friday-Sunday)
Due to crane placement to replace the chiller at the Molecular Medical Research Building, three of four westbound lanes and the sidewalk on East Broad Street between College Street and the alley adjacent to MMRB will be closed from 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 through 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 and 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 through 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. VCU is coordinating with the city of Richmond. Signage will be posted to direct traffic.

RecWell November Climbing Clinics
RecWell’s Outdoor Adventure Program offers a variety of climbing clinics at the Cary Street Gym Climbing Wall, 101 S. Linden St. Registration opens the day before the clinic. Beginner-friendly climbing clinics for November include knots and anchor building on Thursday, Nov. 7 and sport climbing on Monday, Nov. 11. Student Activity Fee Funding Informational Session/Tabling
Over the past year a committee composed of student leaders and staff from the Division of Student Affairs worked together on a plan to strengthen student organizations. After careful consideration and comparison review to other Virginia universities, the committee recommended the Student Activity Fee be raised for the first time in 20 years ($20 per semester for undergraduates on the Monroe Park campus, $3 per semester for graduate students) in order to best support student organizations moving forward. The committee will table Thursday, Nov. 21 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the University Student Commons, 907 Floyd Ave.

Students Caring About Cancer Head Drive to Assemble Chemo Care Packages
Students Caring About Cancer at VCU is hosting a chemo care package drive until Monday, Dec. 2. Donation boxes can be found at 806 W. Franklin St./Psychology Reception and 830 E. Participants Are Invited for Study Examining the Impact of Acute and Chronic Stress on Cardiovascular Health
Individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who identify as Black or African American are invited to participate in a research study examining the effect of acute and chronic stress on cardiovascular and inflammation responses to an acute mental challenge. Raffle drawings for financial compensation will be conducted. This study will take place at 500 Academic Centre on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus. Principal Investigator: Lee Franco, Ph.D., Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences.

Seeking Students Who Identify as AAPI and/or First Gen for a Research Study About Safe Spaces at VCU
We are a VCU research team conducting research about Safe Spaces at VCU from the perspective of first-generation and AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) students. We are recruiting students who identify as first-generation and/or AAPI students to participate in a remote interview (via Zoom). The interview will require 30-60 minutes of your time. The online interview will be recorded so that researchers can keep track of what you've said. Neither your name nor any other identifying information will be associated with the recording. Only the research team will be able to review the recordings. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. If you are willing and are eligible to participate, you will receive a $25 egift card in compensation for your time and effort.
