Lecture by Visiting Artist Alexis Sablone

VCU's Department of Sculpture + Extended Media and the Richmond City Public Arts Commission will present a visiting artist lecture by Alexis Sablone at the VCU Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St. Sablone is an architect, designer, multidisciplinary artist, professional skateboarder and Olympian. Sablone's work brings together the worlds of architecture and skateboarding through the design of hybridized playscapes and large-scale interactive sculptures.

What Now? Reflections on the 2024 Elections
6 p.m.
Political Science faculty will discuss key implications for the outcome of the recent elections and what a second Trump presidency could mean for our country and abroad. Panelists will discuss a range of issues, including the courts, reproductive rights, wars in Ukraine and Middle East, Virginia politics and the global environmental crisis. A Q&A will follow. RecWell’s Mindful Ambassador Program will host a two-hour virtual workshop for students, faculty and staff who are interested in creating a mindful revolution and healthier campus community. Lecture by Visiting Artist Marianna Simnett

VCU's Department of Painting and Printmaking and the Department of Photo/Film will together present a lecture by Marianna Simnett in the theater of the University Student Commons, 907 Floyd Ave. Simnett is an artist, filmmaker and musician. She uses vivid and visceral means to explore the body as a site of transformation. In psychologically charged works that challenge both herself and the viewer, Simnett imagines radical new worlds filled with untamed thoughts and strange tales.

Doctoral Lecture Series: 'Volunteers in the Parks - Findings From an Embedded Research Project With the National Park Service'

Research on volunteerism in national parks is rare; no systematic research has been undertaken about the management, motivation or impact of volunteers serving in parks. Thomas Bryer, Ph.D., University of Central Florida, will share the methodological innovations and early findings from a year-long research project in more than 30 national parks - including eight in Virginia. RecWell OAP Wilderness First Responder Winter Course
The Wilderness First Responder session is a hands-on 72-hour course covering response and assessment, musculoskeletal injuries, environmental emergencies, survival skills, soft tissue injuries and medical emergencies using scenarios, mock rescues and skill stations. A three-year American Red Cross adult/child lay responder CPR/AED certification is included. This class meets all day every day of the listed week, with one to two nights of class. Lodging may be requested as an addition on a per-night basis. Register by Jan. 1, 2025

RecWell OAP Central California Coast Backpacking Spring Break Trip
RecWell’s OAP is hosting a week of backpacking and exploring the mountains, vistas and natural environment of the Central California coast from Sunday, March 9 through Saturday, March 15, 2025. The price includes food, transportation from San Jose, CA to the trailhead, camping permits, entry fees and equipment. The price does not include airfare to or from the start and end point. A trip interest meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Outing Rental Center (130 S Linden St). Registration runs Thursday, Nov. 14 through Friday, Feb 7.
