'Encountering Wicked Problems as Artists and Designers'
Monday, Mar. 27, 2017 at 12:30 p.m.
The Department of Art Education hosts visiting scholar, Aaron Knochel, Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University, for his talk "Encountering Wicked Problems as Artists and Designers" in Franklin Terrace, Room 301. The talk will focus on curriculum to encounter "wicked problems" (Rittel & Webber, 1973) or problems that are especially dynamic due to their fluctuating parameters that allows for multiple entry points in the inquiry process. As a central structure to this kind of transdisciplinary inquiry, design thinking offers an iterative methodology that emphasizes process in exploring solutions to an inquiry. Design thinking is not a singular approach to design. Rather, design thinking references problem solving that takes a cyclical pathway through stages of discovery, interpretation, ideation, experimentation and evolution. Project work encountering wicked problems will be reviewed to discuss the role of artists and designers engaging in the complexity of contemporary life.
