The Office of Trademarks an Licensing hosts a vendor fair in the University Student Commons, Virginia Salons. Students, faculty and staff are invited to meet with licensed vendors who can help produce VCU-branded products for departmental use, student groups, giveaways and promotions. There will be a raffle with a chance to win over 10 items. Free cookies and beverages will be provided, while supplies last.

English Faculty Forum: 'Drone Warfare and Drone Art: Labor and Dehumanization in the Robotic Imaginary'

The Department of English sponsors a brown bag event featuring Jennifer S. Rhee, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of English, discussing "Drone Warfare and Drone Art: Labor and Dehumanization in the Robotic Imaginary" in Hibbs Hall, Room 308. Rhee will present germinal research from her forthcoming book, tracing connections between the U.S. robotics technologies and cultural forms at the site of dehumanization and devalued labor. Rhee argues that the figure of the robot in contemporary culture and technology is largely shaped by the conceptions of the human, and more importantly of the dehumanized. All are welcome to attend and bring lunch.

'Wednesdays in The Workshop': Paper Engineering and Pop-Up Books

VCU Libraries hosts "Wednesdays in the Workshop," an open house designed to help attendees explore new equipment, techniques, softwares or experiences every Wednesday at Cabell Library. This week's topic will be "DIY Pop-Up Books." Participants will learn paper engineering techniques that make cut-outs move.

Three brothers; two suicides; one story of perseverance. Active Minds and University Counseling Services present Dennis Gillan, national speaker and mental health advocate, sharing his personal journey to recovery as he seeks to raise awareness and combat stigma surrounding mental health in the University Student Commons Theater. A question-and-answer session will follow.

'Questing Cinema' Series: 'Spotlight' Screening
Thursday, Sep. 21, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
VCU Libraries' Questioning Cinema series invites students, faculty, staff and the greater community to screenings of significant films that tackle themes in the humanities, arts and sciences. "Spotlight" will be screened in Cabell Library, Room 303. During the series, the screenings are followed by a short discussion on the themes and subjects of each film. Popcorn and beverages will be provided at each screening. The Oscar-winning "Spotlight" details the Boston Globe's investigation of child sexual abuse covered up by the Catholic Church.

Guest Artist Recital: Megan Arns, Percussion

The Department of Music presents a guest artist recital featuring Megan Arns, assistant professor of percussion, University of Missouri, in the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall. Arns will present a free lecture recital on Per Nørgård's I-Ching, relating the work to Nørgård's study of Indonesian gamelan music. Admission is free.

University Counseling Services presents the Alive! Mental Health Fair on the Commons Plaza. Attendees will learn more about suicide warning signs, myths and facts; enjoy a graffiti wall where they can spray, write or draw what inspires them; see a brain exhibit with images of brains impacted by mental illness; and share a secret on a postcard. There will be free T-shirts and prizes.

On Campus Flu Shot Clinics
Human Resources provides eligible VCU faculty and staff with seasonal flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis beginning in October. For dates and locations, visit the website below. To receive the vaccine, employees must participate in the State Health Benefits program and show their health plan card. Note that employees who intend to use the shots to obtain "Do Right" credit for the Aetna Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) must obtain written confirmation of the flu shot from Walgreens when they receive their shot.

The VCU Office of Continuing and Professional Education (OCPE) presents a variety of face-to-face and online opportunities for personal and professional development for VCU faculty, staff, students and alumni. Noncredit certificate programs include: Corporate Event Planning, Certified Wedding and Event Planning, Signature Wedding and Event Design, and Paralegal Studies. Accepting Applications: 2018 VCU Leadership Development Program
The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs accepts applications for the VCU Leadership Development Program class of 2018. The goal of this program is to develop current and emerging leaders at VCU who represent the academic and administrative units of the university and VCU Health System. Sixth Annual Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium: Abstract Submissions Accepted until Oct. 31
The Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care accepts abstract submissions for the sixth annual Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium until close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Oral presentations and posters that showcase interprofessional education, practice or scholarship are welcome from students, faculty, educators and practitioners. Encouraged themes and topics include interprofessionalism in: disease prevention in vulnerable populations, professional mindfulness in practice, caring for complex patients, and workforce development. VCU Outdoor Adventure Program: Youghiogheny Rafting Trip
The Outdoor Adventure Program offers a weekend of white water rafting on the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania from Sept. 23-24. The trip will involve rafting through one section of river on Saturday, camping under the stars near Ohiopyle, and then rafting a different section on Sunday before returning to Richmond. The cost will be $75 for students and $85 for faculty/staff/members. Price includes food, transportation, equipment and guides. Register by Thursday, Sept. 21, through the MyRecSports portal.

Research Opportunity
Are you a woman in menopause experiencing anxiety? Would you like to talk about your experiences? Researchers at the VCU School of Nursing are interested in learning more about women’s health in menopause. Participation in this qualitative study would involve a face to face interview (approximately 1 hour) to discuss your personal experience with anxiety in menopause. The interview will be audio recorded and will take place at a location convenient to you. You will receive a gift card to a local business for participation in the study.
