Sanger Series: ‘Going Viral’ with VCU Alumnus Jeffery Taubenberger, M.D., Ph.D.
VCU Libraries and the Office of Research and Innovation present the first lecture of the “Sanger Series” on Monday, Feb. 19, from 5-7 p.m. in the Hermes A. Kontos Medical Sciences Building Auditorium. Pioneering virologist and VCU alumnus Jeffery Taubenberger, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Viral Pathogenesis and Evolution Section, Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, will introduce the broad scope of the series: “On the Centenary of the 1918 Flu: Remembering the Past and Planning for the Future.” Taubenberger was the first scientist to sequence the genome of the influenza virus that caused the 1918 influenza pandemic. VCU Libraries Innovative Media department invites the VCU community to "Tech Tuesdays" at Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, Lecture Room 2-010. Attendees at this "Tech Tuesday" session will learn the tips, tricks and techniques of 3D modeling and printing with hands-on demonstrations of library technology resources, services and workspaces. All "Tech Tuesdays" run from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and are held in Tompkins-McCaw Lecture Room.

VCU Recreational Sports Wellness presents "Love Your Health: How to Love Yourself," an event which outlines the benefits of self massage at the Hunton Student Center. The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering sponsors the screening of "The New Fire" at the Grace Street Theater as part of the RVA Environmental Film Festival. The Wellness Resource Center hosts "BARstander Training: Intervention on Tap" in the University Student Commons, Virginia Rooms C-D. This workshop is intended to empower bartenders and wait staff to have an active role in ending sexual assault and harassment. In addition to providing tips to advocate for survivors and teaching pro-social methods of intervening.
School of Education Oehler Lecture Series: 'Latino Students: Challenging Myths and Reframing Assets'

The School of Education presents its annual "Oehler Lecture Series" at the Sports Medicine Building. This year, Patricia Gándara, Ph.D., will provide an overview of the challenges facing the Latino community and the educators that serve it and will highlight assets that make the changing demographics a win-win situation for Virginia.

Currents of Change Award for Outstanding University-Community Partnerships: Nominations Accepted
The Council for Community Engagement seeks nominations for the Currents of Change Award for Outstanding University-Community Partnerships. Nominations for outstanding university-community partnerships are accepted in four focus areas: (1) community-engaged teaching; (2) community-engaged outreach; (3) community-engaged research and (4) student initiated. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, March 30.

VCU Recreational Sports: Lifeguard Certification Course
VCU Recreational Sports offers a lifeguard certification course at the Cary Street Gym, Friday-Sunday, Feb. 16-18, and Feb. 23-25. The cost is $100 for students and $175 for members. Registration is available on the MyRecSports portal until Thursday, Feb. 15.
