Curve fitting in MATLAB
12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research and VCU Postdoctoral Association present "Curve fitting in MATLAB" with Anna Nagle, PhD, in the Tompkins-McCaw Library, Room 2-010. "Fall into Seafood"
12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Activities Programming Board at VCU presents "Fall into Seafood" in the University Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballrooms. With October being seafood month, this event will have an array of seafood including crab, shrimp, mussels and crawfish. There will also be a make your own fish bowl station and one lucky winner will receive a goldfish!

Dangerous Goods Training
Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 from 9 a.m. to noon
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety hosts Handling Dangerous Goods training for VCU and VCU Health employees who handle (as in receipt for, mark, label, pack and prepare/sign shipping documents) dangerous goods in the George Ben Johnston Auditorium. Registration is NOT required. Handling dangerous goods without training or with lapsed training is illegal and may subject the handler and University to fines.

VCU Fall Jazz Festival

VCU Jazz Orchestras I and II and faculty perform in a special three-set concert in the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door and free with a VCU student ID. Music includes Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Frank Foster, Oliver Nelson, Sammy Nestico, Benny Carter, Fats Waller and Bill Holman.

Health Disparities Roundtable

The Center on Health Disparities invites the VCU community to sample a low sugar lunch and to consider the benefits of being sugar free with speaker, Melissa Burton, in the Larrick Student Center, Jackson Ward Conference Room. Rec Sports and Outdoor Adventure Program: 'No Slack Climbathon'
Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
VCU Rec Sports and the Outdoor Adventure host a 12-hour climbing marathon called "No Slack Climbathon" at the Cary Street Gym and Manchester Wall to benefit Operation Underground Railroad. Participants will climb while also having an opportunity to participate in other activities like slacklining, log rolling and knot-tying races. Each climber will make a $14 donation to O.U.R. when registering.

The Wellness Resource Center hosts "BARstander Training: Intervention on Tap" in the University Student Commons, Virginia Rooms C-D. This workshop is intended to empower bartenders and wait staff to have an active role in ending sexual assault and harassment. In addition to providing tips to advocate for survivors and teaching pro-social methods of intervening.
Muslim Students Association: 'Roots 2'

The Muslim Students Association presents "Roots 2" in the Trani Center for Life Sciences, Room 253. This is an educational event featuring a student leading a discussion and talk on any topic that is relevant to daily life on campus and usually ties back to Islamic roots. Hepatobiliary Cancers: Pathobiology and Translational Advances
Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 at 8 a.m.
Basic and translational liver cancer researchers, hepatologists, hepatic oncologists, residents, students and members of patient advocacy organizations promoting hepatobiliary cancer research are invited to attend the first multi-day international conference to be held in the U.S. that is dedicated to liver cancer research. The conference will be held Dec. 7-10 at the Virginia Crossings Hotel & Conference Center, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway Glen Allen, Va. Early registration at $275 runs through Oct. 16. Late registration at $375 runs through Nov. 6. Pre-/postdoctoral registration at $175 runs through Nov. 6.

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute is Accepting Applications: 2018 VCU Leadership Development Program
The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs accepts applications for the VCU Leadership Development Program Class of 2018. The goal of this program is to develop approximately 30 current and emerging leaders each year at VCU who represent the academic and administrative units of the university and VCU Health. Applications for the 2018 class are due by Sunday, Oct. 15.

Postconcussion Syndrome Study
If you are age 21 or over, and have a diagnosis of Postconcussion syndrome, you may qualify to participate in a research study conducted in the Richmond, Va. area. Participants of this study will be asked to meet two times in a private area to protect confidentiality. Once to meet with the student investigator to complete four sets of questionnaires and receive a kit for collection of a sample of saliva for purposes of measuring a stress biomarker. A second shorter meeting will be required to pick up the sample of saliva. Compensation is available at completion of the study. VCU Rec Sports OAP Day River SUP
Head to the James River with knowledgeable instructors from the VCU OAP to learn the basics of stability, balance and maneuvering on a stand up paddle board. Pack a lunch, as food is not included. Cost is $15 for students and $20 for members $20. Register by October 10.

The START-Play Research Study on Infants with Motor Delays at VCU’s Physical Therapy Department
The START-Play Research Program is comparing a new physical therapy to usual community care. START-Play targets motor skills and thinking. We assign your baby to START-Play or usual care group. Researchers will visit 5 times over 1 year and record your baby’s skills, toy play and parent-infant play. Eligibility: baby must be 7-16 months (adjusted for prematurity), have motor delays and can sit propped for 3+ seconds, but can’t get in/out of sitting.
