Great Place: HR Redesign FAQ: How do I get a raise in the new HR plan?
There are four ways an employee’s base pay may increase over time: (1) merit-based increases (on-cycle): typically established as part of the university's budget setting process with the specific amount based on the employee’s annual performance rating; (2) career advancement promotions (on-cycle): a salary increase associated with achieving specified milestones within the employee’s career development plan (also called promotion in place); (3) competitive promotions: when an employee applies through the recruitment process and is selected for a position with a corresponding higher market range; (4) Off-cycle salary increases: salary increases that occur to address unanticipated circumstances or scheduled changes occurring outside of the annual merit increase timeframe, such as retention, internal alignment or off-cycle career advancement.
