Great Place: HR Redesign FAQ: Is it true that exempt employees only have to report leave for absences of four hours or more?
Yes, the Working@VCU: Great Place HR Policy does allow for flexibility for exempt employees in reporting their leave. Nonroutine or occasional absences of less than half a day (four hours) are considered incidental and not reportable. Exempt employees are expected to work the number of hours necessary to get the job done. This frequently results in long days or work weeks beyond 40 hours. This leave reporting provision is in recognition of this flexible scheduling. Therefore, leave reporting is not required for things like coming in an hour late from a dentist appointment or leaving early on a Friday for an out of town trip. Exempt employees still have to coordinate attendance with their managers and it is ultimately the manager's responsibility to make sure that this arrangement is being used appropriately. This reporting flexibility only applies to exempt employees who are University and Academic Professionals. The state still requires exempt Classified employees to report leave in 15 minute increments. Per federal FLSA regulations, all non-exempt employees (both University and Academic Professionals and Classified) are required to report their time in 15-minute increments. For more information or to submit a question, contact hrredesign@vcu.edu or visit greatplace.vcu.edu.
