VCU to Conduct Test of Emergency Communications
VCU will conduct a full test of its emergency communications and alerting systems, including 10 sirens throughout the Monroe Park and MCV campuses, at noon today, Feb. 7. The full test will include the sirens along with text messages, Alertus boxes, mass email, digital signs, desktop alert, LiveSafe, social media and VCU website information — all part of a multichannel system for communicating emergency information to VCU students, faculty, staff, visitors and the community. Immediately following the conclusion of the full system test, students, faculty and staff on the Monroe Park Campus will hear a second siren activation. At the end of this second siren, VCU Police will send out a text message to let the community know that all testing has concluded.

Community Service Leaders Roundtable

The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement hosts a roundtable in the University Student Commons, Shockoe Room. The discussion is open to student leaders who want to learn more about upcoming service opportunities, share successes and challenges in working with the community and learn more about upcoming leadership and civic engagement programs. Pizza will be provided.

'The Community Forum on Critical Issues in Black Richmond: Black Boys in Public Education'
7:30 p.m.
The Department of African American Studies and the National Jericho Movement present a forum on black boys in public education in the Academic Learning Commons, Room 1105. The forum will be facilitated by Evandra Catherine, a Ph.D. student in the Special Education and Disability Program at VCU. Her research focuses on teacher responsiveness to black boy behavior in grades K-2, the identification of black boys in special education and the shortage of black male educators in the teacher workforce. Free and open to the public.

Chili’s at VCU Hosts Official Men’s Basketball Away Game Watch Parties

This February, Chili's at VCU hosts the official Men's Basketball watch parties. Fans can catch the HAVOC live on each of Chilis' nine TVs as the team takes on University of Richmond on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 9 p.m.; George Washington on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m.; and Massachusetts on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. There will be food specials including the $5 game-day burger and attendees are encouraged to wear VCU gear for free giveaways and prizes. *Note date correction* Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO) presents the Student Accessibility Conference in the University Student Commons Theater. Over a series of four, one-hour sessions, experts from across the VCU community will present a general overview of disabilities, mental health and wellness at the university; pertinent information on emotional support animals and service dogs on campus; strategies and tips for making classrooms and materials accessible to all students; and making online content accessible.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day

VCU Center for Sport Leadership presents National Girls and Women in Sports Day at the VCU Sports Medicine Building on 1300 W. Broad St. #113. The event will feature a panel discussion with prominent female sports leaders, including Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade and Alliance for Women Coaches director Megan Kahn. The keynote speaker will be Jane Rodgers, executive director of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation.

Film Screening: 'The Way of All Flesh'

VCU Libraries and University Student Commons and Activities invite the VCU community to bring lunch to a film screening and discussion of "The Way of All Flesh" in the Hunton Student Center, TML Learning Center, Room 209. This BBC documentary looks at how Henrietta Lacks' "immortal cell line" impacted cancer research and how her family finally found out. A brief discussion on medical ethics will follow the film.

Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia Tour

The Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement invites the VCU community to take a guided tour of the newly updated Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, 122 W. Leigh St. The BHMVA will guide attendees through decades of visual, oral and written records and artifacts commemorating the lives and accomplishments of blacks in Virginia. After the tour, attendees are welcome to free admission to the exhibits, including a new black and white photography exhibit from the 1950s.

SAVES Training Part Two

Students Advocating Violence Education and Support (SAVES) holds part two of its training for those interested in the University Student Commons, Alumni Board Room. Participants who attend both part one and two of the trainings will become fully-trained members of SAVES. Trained members will be able to engage in all aspects of SAVES volunteer work including community education through public presentations. SAVES is a peer education group on campus speaking and raising awareness on the topics of sexual assault, intimate partner violence and stalking.
Third Annual Black Love Matters

The VCU Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers, in partnership with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, presents the third annual Black Love Matters event in the Larrick Student Center, Court End Ballroom B. VCU Recreational Sports Outdoor Adventure Program: Cary Street Crux
Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at 9 a.m.
VCU Recreational Sports Outdoor Adventure Program presents the "Cary Street Crux" at the Cary Street Gym Climbing Wall. Beginner, intermediate and advanced climbers are invited to compete and test their skills against some of the best climbers on the East Coast. This year, the Crux is giving back through a service project on Friday, Feb. 9, at 8:15 a.m. at the North side of the Tyler Potterfield Bridge. The first 15 volunteers will receive a refund of the $20 admission fee.
