The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs presents a "Teach-In" with Brittney Maddox in the University Student Commons, Suite 215. Attendees will enjoy a presentation about hip-hop's relationship to rappers and other urban artists. The presentation will discuss prominent rappers who have shared their experience, party culture as self-medication, and gender expectations within hip-hop.

Recreational Sports: Open House for Faculty and Staff
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
VCU and VCU Health Human Resources representatives and Recreational Sports hold an open house at the Cary Street Gym on the Monroe Park Campus for faculty and staff. The event will include tours, membership information, BMI screening and wellness activities. The MCV Campus open house will take place on Friday, Sept. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the MCV Campus Recreation Center. No registration is needed. These sessions will count towards VCU's RamStrong Wellness Challenge.

Screening: 'The Legend of Cool Disco Dan' Documentary
2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs presents a free screening of the documentary "The Legend of Cool Disco Dan" in the University Student Commons, Suite 215. A feature documentary, narrated by D.C. native Henry Rollins, that tells the story of Washington, D.C. in the 1980s through the eyes of D.C. graffiti legend, COOL "DISCO" DAN. Blending exclusive interviews with dozens of local and national celebrities along with archival footage, D.C. natives offer the most comprehensive portrait to date.

VCUDine invites the VCU community to visit the Fan Fare Station in Shafer Court Dining Center's Market 810 for a premium steak night dinner. For one swipe, attendees will get braised short ribs with crispy onions over truffle mashed potatoes and green beans. For two swipes, get a 12oz. 'Hip Hop Icons: An Evening with MC Lyte and Mad Skillz'
7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs presents an evening with MC Lyte and Mad Skillz in the University Student Commons, Richmond Salons. MC Lyte is a rapper who gained fame in the late-80s, becoming the first solo female rapper to release a full album with 1988's critically-acclaimed "Lyte as a Rock." She's long been considered one of hip-hop's pioneer feminists. Mad Skillz is a rapper known for his acclaimed 1996 album "From Where???", a reference to his origins in Virginia. He is also known for his yearly "Rap Ups."

Jesús Silva Guitar Scholarship Recital

The Department of Music presents a free recital featuring recipients of the Jesús Silva Merit Scholarship for classical guitarists in the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall. Established in 1991, the scholarship is named for Jesús Silva (1914-1996), a world renowned guitar virtuoso, teacher, and Musician Artist-in-Residence at VCU from 1979 to 1982. Admission is free.

Science, Technology and Society kicks off its fall 2017 speaker series, "Science Fact, Science Fiction," featuring Evelynn Hammonds discussing "The Marginalization of Experience: Woman of Color in STEM" in the University Student Commons, Richmond Salons I-II. Women of color have historically had the lowest participation rate of any demographic group in scientific and technical fields. This talk will examine the long history of the under-representation of women of color in STEM fields. This event is free and open to the public.

'Questing Cinema' Series: 'Spotlight' Screening
Thursday, Sep. 21, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
VCU Libraries' Questioning Cinema series invites students, faculty, staff and the greater community to screenings of significant films that tackle themes in the humanities, arts and sciences. "Spotlight" will be screened in Cabell Library, Room 303. During the series, the screenings are followed by a short discussion on the themes and subjects of each film. Popcorn and beverages will be provided at each screening. The Oscar-winning "Spotlight" details the Boston Globe's investigation of child sexual abuse covered up by the Catholic Church.

Outdoor Adventure Program: Bike Clinics
Thursday, Sep. 21, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The VCU Outdoor Adventure Program offers a series of free bike clinics this semester. During this clinic, attendees will learn about common causes of flat tires and how to prevent them at the Outing Rental Center. Bicycle experts will demonstrate how to fix a flat and attendees will have a chance to participate. Participants can bring their own bike or use one provided. (The OAP does not sell bicycle inner tubes; if repairing a flat tire on a bike, participants should bring the appropriate tube for their bike.)

Faculty and Staff in VRS Hybrid Plan: September 15 Deadline is Approaching for Voluntary Contribution Elections
Virginia Retirement System Hybrid Plan participants can change voluntary contributions once per calendar quarter. Friday, Sept. 15, is the election deadline for changes to become effective in October. Participants can voluntarily contribute up to 4% of their creditable salary to the defined contribution component of the Hybrid Plan, and receive up to a 2.5% employer match.

Women in Science: Fall Food Drive
Women in Science at VCU hosts its fall food drive from Sept. 11-22. Various donation boxes can be found in Sanger Hall, McGlothlin Medical Education Center, Molecular Medicine Research Building, Wood Building, Lyons Building and the Kontos Medical Science Building. Food donations will benefit FeedMore and RamPantry.

Calling for New Moms to participate in the “Weight and Pregnancy” Research Study.
Are you a new mom (child aged 6-9 months)? Would you like to be in a research study about healthy lifestyle choices across pregnancy and the postpartum period? The “Weight and Pregnancy” study involves completing questionnaires and brief interviews with staff to discuss aspects of nutrition, weight, physical activity, and interaction with your provider across your pregnancy and into the postpartum period. This study will take approximately 1 hour to complete and participants will be financially compensated.
