Active Minds and University Counseling Services present Dennis Gillan, national speaker and mental health advocate, sharing his personal journey to recovery as he seeks to raise awareness and combat stigma surrounding mental health in the University Student Commons Theater. A question-and-answer session will follow.

VCU Fashion: 'Wool Yarn Production in Virginia'
10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The Department of Fashion hosts Francis Chester, Cestari Sheep and Wool Company, for a talk on wool yarn production in Virginia at The Depot. Free and open to the public.
VCUDine: Hawaiian Luau
4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
VCUDine hosts a Hawaiian Luau Dinner Bash at Shafer Court Dining Center. Attendees can swipe in to enjoy Kalua Pork with tropical salsa, fried plantains, sweet and sour shrimp, Hawaiian-stuffed sweet potato, pineapple upside-down cake, and pina colada cookies. Hula dancers will be performing and a special themed gift will be given to the first 50 guests. Guest Artist Recital: Megan Arns, Percussion
7:30 p.m.
The Department of Music presents a guest artist recital featuring Megan Arns, assistant professor of percussion, University of Missouri, in the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall. Arns will present a free lecture recital on Per Nørgård's I-Ching, relating the work to Nørgård's study of Indonesian gamelan music. Admission is free.

The Department of Music presents a VCU Symphony concert in the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall. The concert will feature music from "Jurassic Park," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Sound of Music" and "West Side Story," with additional works by Berlioz and Weber. 'Losing Sonia Sotomayor: An American Life After Multiculturalism'

As part of the events commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month at VCU, the Division for Inclusive Excellence presents Lazaro Lima discussing his forthcoming book on Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic and Latina Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, in the University Student Commons Theater. Lima is the E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Chair in Liberal Arts at the University of Richmond and associate provost for faculty. 'Pups on the Plaza 2017'

The Center for Human-Animal Interaction holds its annual "Pups on the Plaza 2017" in the McGlothlin Medical Education Center Lobby. This "fur-iffic" event is a CVC fundraiser for the Center for Human-Animal Interaction and features the Dogs on Call therapy dogs. Meal tickets are $4 and event T-shirts designed by a VCU student are $10. Tickets can be purchased at the event or on the MCV Campus in advance at pre-sales on Friday, Sept. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Main Hospital, First Floor, Learning Center, or on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Main Hospital, First Floor Kiosk.

Outdoor Adventure Program: 'No Man's Land Film Festival'

The Outdoor Adventure Program presents the "No Man's Land Film Festival," featuring a collection of short adventure films, in the Temple Building, Room 1164. The festival travels worldwide, year-round to share a selection of best-loved films from the festival archives as well as brand new films featuring the most driven and inspired female adventurers. The Burnside Watstein Award recognizes one or more individuals who enrich the sense of community at Virginia Commonwealth University, and in particular, make a significant difference in the lives of LGBTQIA+ faculty, staff and students. Virginia Commonwealth University's December Commencement exercises take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, in the E.J Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. VCU Outdoor Adventure Program: Youghiogheny Rafting Trip
The Outdoor Adventure Program offers a weekend of white water rafting on the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania from Sept. 23-24. The trip will involve rafting through one section of river on Saturday, camping under the stars near Ohiopyle, and then rafting a different section on Sunday before returning to Richmond. The cost will be $75 for students and $85 for faculty/staff/members. Price includes food, transportation, equipment and guides. Register by Thursday, Sept. 21, through the MyRecSports portal.

Emerging Leaders in Interprofessional Education: Nominations Accepted
The Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care seeks nominations of students and junior faculty with demonstrated excellence in interprofessional leadership. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of interprofessional faculty, and selectees will be recognized and may be asked to participate on the Emerging Leaders panel at the sixth annual Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium on Saturday, Feb. 3. Self-nominations are encouraged and accepted. Nominations are accepted until close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
