2018 Dogs On Call Calendar Sales

The Center for Human-Animal Interaction holds 2018 Dogs on Call calendar sales at the Community Health Education Center in the Gateway Building, Ground Floor. Attendees can meet the Dogs on Call therapy dogs and show their support by purchasing a 2018 Dogs on Call calendar for $10. All proceeds support the Dogs on Call and The Center for Human-Animal Interaction and will help therapy dogs continue to spread joy to patients, students and staff.

Dental Hygiene Application Workshop

Udall Scholarship Information Session

The National Scholarship Office hosts an information session about the Udall Scholarship in the Honors College, Room 1210. The Udall Scholarship provides financial support and networking opportunities for sophomores and juniors who are pursuing careers in environmental sciences, policy or advocacy. First-year students who are interested in such careers are also invited to attend.

'Great SEXpectations: Can We Get Freaky Tonight?'

The Wellness Resource Center presents "Great SEXpectations" in the University Student Commons, Suite 215. This fun and informative play-shop from Sex Educators will help remove sexual stigmas and taboos about self-pleasure, fetish sex and kink sex. 'School-To-Prison Pipeline' Speaker Panel

Amnesty International at VCU presents the "School-to-Prison Pipeline" speaker panel at The Depot. Youth incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline are issues that affect every person in the community, but directly and disproportionately affect students of color and students with disabilities. 'Gym Jam: Cardio Hip Hop Dance Edition'

VCU Homecoming presents "Gym Jam," a night filled with hip hop cardio dance moves, at the Cary Street Gym. The first 50 people will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. Attendees will meet at the indoor soccer field on the second floor.

English Faculty Forum: John Glover, 'Aesthetic Experiments: H.P. Lovecraft and 'Pickman's Model' in 1927'

VCU English sponsors a lecture in Hibbs Hall, Room 308, by John T. Glover, humanities reference librarian and affiliated English faculty. Glover will cover aspects of Lovecraft's aesthetics from 1925-1927. Lovecraft returned to Providence from New York, transitioned from one literary style to another, and wrote the short story "Pickman's Model" and the essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature," grappling with the elevation of simple horror to ‘weird fiction.’" All are welcome. Attendees are invited to bring lunch.

'The Many Aspects of Chaos: Math Colloquium'

The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics welcomes Jim Yorke, University of Maryland, who will give a talk on "The Many Aspects of Chaos" in the Academic Learning Commons, Room 2100. Yorke coined the word "chaos" in a famous 1975 paper and is known to be a great speaker. This event is free and open to the public.

Richmond Marathon Causes Traffic Changes
Facilities Management advises that there will be numerous traffic changes and detours for the Anthem Richmond Marathon on Saturday, Nov. 11. Broad, W. Grace, W. Main and Belvidere streets will be closed for extended periods of time so faculty and students will need to carefully plan their routes to campus and allow extra time to reach their destination. The Waze traffic app is available to help navigate around Richmond on race day. Road closures have been pre-loaded into the app, which should allow drivers to move about town using the most efficient route possible. The key road closures and detours around campus include: • Broad Street (both eastbound and westbound) between 5th and 11th streets will be closed to traffic from 4-10 a.m. Westbound traffic will be detoured north onto 11th St. and west on Leigh St. • Broad Street (both eastbound and westbound) between 5th Street and N. Boulevard will be closed from 6-9 a.m. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via a u-turn westbound on Broad Street from 7:30-9 a.m. • Belvidere Street northbound at Grace Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The recommended detour will be east on Byrd Street to the Downtown Expressway eastbound to I-95 northbound. • W. Main Street, from Belvidere to Boulevard will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Westbound traffic Main St. will be detoured north on Belvidere, east on Franklin, and south on 1st Street to the westbound Downtown Expressway. • Belvidere Street southbound between Broad and Grace streets will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The recommended detour for southbound Belvidere Street will be onto I-95 southbound just north of Leigh Street. • Grace Street from Allen Ave. to 6th Street will be closed from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Caps, Gowns and Hoods for December Commencement
December Commencement exercises take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, in the E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Students participating in the ceremony must wear caps, gowns and hoods. Academic regalia is available for purchase at the Barnes & Noble @ VCU beginning Tuesday, Oct. 10, on the Monroe Park and MCV campuses. Those unable to visit a campus store may order online at vcu.shopoakhalli.com beginning Thursday, Oct. 12. The last day to order online is Sunday, Nov. 26. Caps and gowns will not be available for purchase at the Commencement ceremony.

Research Participants Invited: The Impact of Inflammation on Cellular Aging
The Kinesiology and Health Science Department at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking healthy male and female participants between 40 and 64 years old with a body mass index (BMI) associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease or a BMI greater than or equal to 30.0 (assessed by the research staff). Eligible participants will receive a free health and body composition assessment from a BodPod test, and will be entered for a chance to with an Amazon gift card.
