The Center for Clinical and Translational Research and Tompkins-McCaw Library present a lunch research seminar, "Who's on Your Research Team?," in the Tompkins-McCaw Library, Room 109. English Faculty Forum: 'I Can't Breathe: Affective Asphyxia' in Claudia Rankine's 'Citizen: An American Lyric'

The Department of English sponsors a talk by Shermaine Jones, Ph.D., in Hibbs Hall, Room 308. Jones traces the "sigh" or emission of deep, audible breath expressing racial exhaustion, and the recurring motif of hanging/suspension in Claudia Rankine's "Citizen: An American Lyric." Jones situates "Citizen" alongside a reading of Eric Garner's death and the subsequent protests. His invocation of "I Can't Breathe," as in Rankine, illustrates the reality of living in a "psychic chokehold."

'Hump Day Dialogues on Tour' Featuring Guadalupe Ramirez
12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs presents "Hump Day Dialogues on Tour" featuring Guadalupe Ramirez in the University Student Commons, OMSA Office. Ramirez will raise awareness to reduce the chances of continued violence against Indigenous people. Ramirez was born in Tejutla, San Marcos, Guatemala. She wanted to become a teacher but was forced to flee school when Guatemalan military disappeared a number of her associates.
'LIVING UP TO THE KISS PRINCIPLE: Creating Analytical Instruments from a CD Player and a Smartphone'

The Forensic Science Department welcomes guest speaker James Landers, Ph.D., Department of Chemistry, University of Virginia, as part of its fall seminar series, in the Academic Learning Commons, Room 2201. 'Civil Rights and Anti-War Activism: Then and Now'

The Department of History presents a lecture by noted Richmond activist, Ben Ragsdale, in the Academic Learning Commons, Room 2100. Ragsdale was an active participant in the anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s at the national and regional levels. He will share his experiences and impressions of the time and compare those movements to today's activism.

The Community Forum: Political Prisoners
7:30 p.m.
The Department of African American Studies and the National Jericho Movement present the first meeting of the Community Forum on Critical Issues in Black Richmond in the Academic Learning Commons, Room 1201. This month's facilitator is Jihad Abdulmumit, chairperson of the Jericho Movement, an organization that advocates for the release of political prisoners in the United States. The event is free and open to the public.
VCU Budget Redesign Information Session for Faculty and Staff

Gail Hackett, provost, and Karol Kain Gray, vice president for finance and budget, host an information session to present information and answer questions about VCU's new budget model in the University Student Commons, Richmond Salon II. Strategic Plan 2025 Town Hall

VCU holds a town hall for feedback on its new strategic plan in the Academic Learning Commons, Room 1201. At this town hall, the five work groups will present their draft themes and goals that will make up the backbone of the new plan, and introduce their preliminary work on implementation.

VCU's English Honor Society presents a free screening of Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Henry V' in Hibbs Hall, Room 403. "Magnificent, passionate and steeped in powerful emotion" ("The Washington Post"), "Henry V" is a "stunning," (Leonard Maltin) Oscar-nominated adventure that takes its place amongst the greatest war films of all time."

Sixth Annual Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium: Abstract Submissions Accepted until Oct. 31
The Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care accepts abstract submissions for the sixth annual Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium until close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Oral presentations and posters that showcase interprofessional education, practice or scholarship are welcome from students, faculty, educators and practitioners. Encouraged themes and topics include interprofessionalism in: disease prevention in vulnerable populations, professional mindfulness in practice, caring for complex patients, and workforce development.
