Careers in the State Department
12 p.m.
VCU Globe and the National Scholarship Office welcome Ambassador Arnold Chacon to VCU Globe, West Grace Street Student Housing-North, Room 1030J. He will give a presentation on careers in the State Department. He is also available earlier Friday for individual meetings with students who cannot attend the information session. To schedule an individual meeting with Ambassador Chacon, students should email Mr. Jeff Wing at the contact information below. These individual meetings will take place in the National Scholarship Office (701. W. Grace St.) between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
'The Evolution (1979 – 2018) of a Field and a Career in Biotechnology by a VCU Grad'

VCU Career Services and the BEST program series presents "The Evolution (1979 – 2018) of a Field and a Career in Biotechnology by a VCU Grad" at the Molecular Medicine Research Building, Room 1013. Dr. Glenn D. Hoke, Ph.D., has been Chief Scientific Officer of Avant Diagnostics, Inc. since May 12, 2016. He has had a distinguished career in biotechnology, beginning with earning his MS in biology and Ph.D. in biochemistry from MCV/VCU. Hoke will share lessons learned from his career.
Black History Month Lunchtime Concert
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
VCU Health Arts in Healthcare presents an African dance performance by Ezibu Muntu African Dance Company in VCU Medical Center, Gateway Building Lobby. Ezibu Muntu is a professional organization of energetic dancers, drummers, entertainers dedicated to invoking a renewed, positive and educated understanding of African culture, values, traditions and art forms as they relate to the citizens of today.
Webcast: 'Reclaiming the Narrative'

Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences hosts a webcast of the UNC Minority Health Conference's William T. Small Jr. Keynote in Tompkins-McCaw Library, Room 2-010. The theme for the conference is "Reclaiming the Narrative." The webcast will stream the recorded keynote address by Monica Raye Simpson followed by a live question-and-answer session with the keynote speaker.

Black History Month Lecture
9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
VCU Health Arts in Healthcare presents a Black History Month breakfast lecture with Ana Edwards in VCU Medical Center, Main Hospital Café Second level meeting room. A native of Los Angeles, Edwards has made her home in Richmond since 1988. She holds a B.A. in Visual Arts from California State Polytechnic University and is now pursuing a masters degree in history at VCU. Edwards is also a Mellon Foundation fellow at the American Civil War Museum.

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs hosts a movie trip to Bow Tie Movieland at Boulevard Square, 1301 N. Boulevard, to see "Black Panther." Movie tickets will be given away on Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the University Student Commons, OMSA Office. Transportation and tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Members of the VCU community are invited to the first COBE Connect Lunch of the spring semester as Tom Bannard, program coordinator for Rams in Recovery, shares his insights and expertise in “Creating a Recovery-Ready Campus” in the University Student Commons, Forum Room. Bannard has been instrumental in leading Rams in Recovery to become the second-largest Collegiate Recovery Program on the East Coast in just five years. English Faculty Forum: Michael Hall, 'Variations on a Paradoxical Theme: Gendered Mobility, Modern Travel, and Imagination in Zora Neale Hurston's Early Creative Works'

VCU English sponsors a brown bag lunch talk by Assistant Professor Michael Hall in Hibbs Hall, Room 308. Hall argues that Hurston's early novels, "Jonah's Gourd Vine" and "Their Eyes were Watching God," - both of which are influenced by Hurston's early ethnographic travels collecting folklore in the American South (1928-1932), present modern travel as a problem of mobility with gendered, racial and ethnic paradigmatic restrictions and impasses.

VCU's third annual Quality in Clinical Research Conference

The Office of Research and Innovation presents the third annual Quality in Clinical Research Conference at the Larrick Student Center, 900 Turpin St. The event will feature keynote sessions by Courtney N. Long, CSO, who will speak on the Bioresearch Monitoring Program (BIMO) process and what the FDA is really looking for during inspections; and Kathy Jenkins, CPO, who will speak about organization and time management for clinical research. National College Health Assessment
The Wellness Resource Center sent out the National College Health Assessment online survey that began Thursday, Feb. 15, and ends Thursday, March 1. Selected students received an email to their VCU accounts with a personal access code. Everyone who completes the confidential survey has the chance to win one of over 50 prizes, including one of 30 Amazon gift cards worth $100 each or one of 50 VCU T-shirts.
VCU Recreational Sports Outdoor Adventure Program Sea Kayaking Spring Break Trip
The VCU Recreational Sports Outdoor Adventure Program offers a spring break trip to Everglades National Park, the largest sub-tropical wilderness in the United States. This is a great introductory trip for those looking to learn about sea kayaking, and there will be lots of opportunities for wildlife viewing and stargazing. Trip fee will be $495 for students/faculty/staff and $595 for members. Includes transportation to and from south Florida, food, equipment, permits and instruction.

The Graduate Student Association is currently accepting submissions for the 21st Annual Graduate Research Symposium and Exhibit.
