Free Screening of 'Paywall: The Business of Scholarship'

VCU Libraries will have a free screening of "Paywall: The Business of Scholarship" in Rooms 250 and 2-010, Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, 509 N. 12th St. The documentary focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into academic publishers and examines the 35-40 percent profit margin associated with the top academic publisher, Elsevier. A discussion will follow the film.

'Bol Gai Deng: Legacy of an African Freedom Fighter'

VCU's Department of African American Studies presents a talk and book signing by Bol Gai Deng in Room 1201, Academic Learning Commons, 1000 Floyd Ave. Deng, a VCU alumnus, arrived in the United States as a Sudanese refugee nearly 20 years ago and is currently running for president of South Sudan while based in Richmond. He will be discussing and signing copies of his book "Bol Gai Deng: Legacy of an African Freedom Fighter," which he wrote with Andrea McDaniel. Attendance is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase.
