'Art and Race in the 18th-Century Atlantic World'

Race and the work of portraitist John Singleton Copley are the subjects of two talks. Nika Elder and Catherine Roach, experts in American and British art, respectively, will offer complementary discussions at "Art and Race in the 18th-Century Atlantic World: Two Talks on John Singleton Copley." VCU's Department of Art History will host the event, in Room 202, Buford House, 922 W. Franklin St. Copley began his career in colonial Boston before moving to London.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse in Native Communities

World AIDS Day Art Showcase

An art show is being staged to raise awareness of AIDS. VCU's Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention and Black Art Student Empowerment present "World AIDS Day Art Showcase" in Room 1112, Grace and Broad Residence Center 1, 1000 W. Grace St. The competition is designed to bring awareness to the AIDS pandemic and celebrate those who live with the disease. All mediums are accepted. First place will be awarded a $50 cash prize; second place will receive $25.

Because of You: 'RAS: To Boldly Go Where None Have Gone Before'

Inhibiting the growth of cancer tumors is the topic of a talk about research at VCU. Paul Dent, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, will present “RAS: To Boldly Go Where None Have Gone Before” at a lecture hosted by VCU's Office of Research and Innovation. Dent's research team has discovered a way to inhibit RAS, a protein that drives cancer tumor growth and chemotherapy resistance, and enhance the degradation of mutant RAS proteins, leading to an upcoming clinical trial.
