Provocations Performance: Michael Demps

Michael Demps, interdisciplinary artist, musician and DJ, will be featured at the ICA. The Institute for Contemporary Art, 601 W. Broad St., presents the Provocations Performance series. Developed in response to the work of exhibiting artist Rashid Johnson, these weekly, drop-in performances feature local performers. Demps will also perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 24.

World Aids Day Art Competition With B.A.S.E. and CCEP

An art competition has been scheduled to heighten AIDS awareness. VCU's Black Art Student Empowerment and the Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention come together to call attention to AIDS. Valerie Cassel Oliver: Intersection of Art and Activism
Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018 at 6 p.m.
Groundbreaking, multidisciplinary artist Howardena Pindell will be the focus of a discussion. VCU's Institute for Contemporary Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will host the event, with VMFA Curator Valerie Cassel Oliver and VCU Assistant Professor Chioke I’Anson, at the VMFA's Leslie Cheek Theater, 200 N. Boulevard. The conversation will explore how Pindell has moved between figurative and abstract painting in an effort to assert her place as an African American woman in the field of contemporary art.

Introduction to Mindfulness

Learn to incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily life. VCU's Office of Continuing and Professional Education presents Introduction to Mindfulness in partnership with the Chrysalis Institute. This three-hour workshop at the institute, 213 Roseneath Road, is an introduction to the practice and benefits of mindfulness.

See the Everglades in a Sea Kayak

Paddle through Everglades National Park in a sea kayak. VCU Recreational Sports Outdoor Adventure Program is hosting a trip to explore the marshes, swamps and open water of the largest sub-tropical wilderness in the U.S. Registration ends Dec. 11 for the trip, Jan. 5-12, 2019.

Male Participants Sought for Research Project
Males ages 40-65 are sought for a research project. VCU's Kinesiology and Health Science Department is conducting a research project to assess the impact of a high active or low active lifestyle and cellular aging on cognitive performance. Participants will be entered for a chance to win an Amazon gift card. Participants must be healthy, with a body mass index less than 30.0 (assessed by the research staff). Two morning visits for an exercise test and brief cognitive tests are required. Individuals with a history of cancer in the last 10 years, pre-existing inflammatory or metabolic diseases (i.e., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis) or are on medications that may alter inflammation or metabolism may not be eligible for this study.
