VCU's Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, Academic Technologies, VCU Libraries and ALT Lab/Online@VCU will offer a Teaching with Technology Showcase. Campus Sustainability Day at Commons Plaza

Campus Sustainability Day is a national day to focus on the sustainability accomplishments of individual universities. The focus of the event, to be at the Commons Plaza and sponsored by VCU's Office of Sustainability, is on reuse. First Friday: Great Force Exhibition Preview and Reception

The ICA will host a special First Friday with the opening of "Great Force," an exhibition featuring the works of 24 artists. The exhibit, curated by Amber Esseiva, uses painting, sculpture, photography, video and performance to examine race in the United States. The event, at the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St., will include live window painting by artist Tomashi Jackson, a Provocations performance by Chino Amobi, DJ Michael Demps, refreshments and a cash bar.

Paloma McGregor Dance Performance

Paloma McGregor, a Caribbean-born, New York-based choreographer, will perform at The Anderson, 907 1/2 W. Franklin St. Her work centers black voices through collaborative, process-based art-making and organizing. She shares her work-in-process during a research residency hosted by VCU as part of the Urban Bush Women Fellowship Program, a component of the UBW Choreographic Center, seeking to bring greater national recognition and support to women choreographers of the African Diaspora.

Embodied Empathy Open House: ALS Embodiment Dress Rehearsal
Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
VCU faculty members John Blatter and Jill Ware of Embodied Empathy present the rehearsal of 10 dancers in virtual reality experiences of ALS patients at different disease stages. This rehearsal is for an upcoming showing at the VCU Now Center where the works will be debuted to the patient's families and caregivers. This project is an ongoing research collaboration between Embodied Empathy, Kathleen Pearson, M.D., and Scott Vota, D.O., of VCU Neurology. The event will be at The Anderson, 907 1/2 W. Franklin St.

Volunteers Needed for RPS 'One Richmond, One Book' Program
Monday, Oct. 7, 2019 from noon to 1 p.m.
VCU's Center for Community Engagement and Impact will host an orientation session for students and staff interested in participating in "One Richmond, One Book." The three-part literacy program will take place in all 26 Richmond City elementary schools. Everyone - students, teachers, administrators, families and community partners - reads the same book at the same time. Volunteers are needed to read to classes. The orientation will be held at the rear of Edmund F. Ackell Residence Center, 1103 W. Marshall St. Bring a lunch if you wish.

Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Training Set

REVIVE! is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. REVIVE! offers training to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone (Narcan). Sessions are open to VCU community members including faculty, staff and students. Training sessions, at the VCU School of Nursing, 1100 E. Leigh St., are limited to 25 persons for each session. VCUarts Theatre To Present 'Eclipsed'
"Eclipsed" is the story of five Liberian women and their tale of survival near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. The production, written by Danai Gurira and directed by Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, Ph.D., will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5, 2 p.m. Oct. 5 and 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at Richard Newdick Theatre, Shafer Street Playhouse, 221 N. Shafer St. "Eclipsed" premiered in Washington, D.C., and opened on Broadway in 2016 in a production starring Lupita Nyong’o and received nominations for five Tony Awards, including a nomination for best play.
