The talk will be in Room 308, Hibbs Hall, 900 Park Ave. Lingold will explore the life and work of a man named Mr. Baptiste, who lived in Jamaica in the late 17th century. He composed music portraying three different African traditions as they were performed by enslaved people at the time. Baptiste’s pieces were eventually published in Hans Sloane’s 1707 travel narrative and natural history of Jamaica. The talk argues that Mr. Baptiste may have been one of the earliest known black American composers while also addressing larger issues concerning questions of identity and race in colonial archives. New Lottery System To Be Used for Spring 2020 MCV Campus Parking Sale

A sales process resembling a lottery system will be used for students interested in purchasing parking on the MCV campus for Spring 2020. The process will begin at midnight Oct. 30. Caps, Gowns and Hoods for December Commencement

December commencement exercises take place at 10 a.m. Dec. 14 in the E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St. Students participating in the ceremony must wear caps, gowns and hoods. Academic regalia should be purchased at the Barnes and Noble @ VCU on your respective campus. Regalia will be available for sale through Dec. 13 on the MCV and Monroe Park campuses. If you are unable to visit your campus store before Dec. 13, you may order online through Dec. 1 at the following URL. Shipping charges apply to online orders. Caps and gowns will not be available for purchase at the commencement ceremony.
