ICA Cinema: Two Films by Jenn Nkiru

The ICA will showcase two works by filmmaker Jenn Nkiru. A discussion will follow. "Black Star: Rebirth Is Necessary" focuses on Nkiru’s personal exploration of blackness, while "Black to Techno" documents the radical musical movement that originated in Detroit in the 1980s. Drawing on archival film and new footage, "Black to Techno" explores how history, technology, geography and race shaped the creation and emergence of techno in Detroit. The films will be shown at the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St.

Health Occupations Students of America at VCU To Meet

Health Occupations Students of America will host its second general body meeting in Room 1030G/H, West Grace Street Student Housing – North (Globe), 830 W. Grace St. A Kaplan representative will explain the organization's offerings. Kaplan is a for-profit corporation that provides educational services to colleges and universities and corporations and businesses, including higher education programs, professional training and certifications, test preparation and student support services. The representative will explain Kaplan's free studying and test prep resources.

Baby Box Project at VCU to Meet

The Baby Box Project at VCU will meet in Room 1030J, West Grace Street Student Housing – North, 830 W. Grace St. The group provides low-income mothers and families with baby supplies in Richmond communities. Discussion at the meeting will include events for the semester, fundraisers, socials and volunteer opportunities. Members will also make cards to deliver with supplies to mothers and their children.

Carolina Espinal, founding principal of Mozaic Strategies and a newly appointed member of the VCU Board of Visitors, will deliver a talk on "Opportunities at the Intersection: How Diversity and Inclusion are Transforming Business and Society." The event is part of the Speaker Series of the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture. The talk, which will be held in the University Student Commons Theater, 907 Floyd Ave., is part of Hispanic Heritage Month. The lecture is free and open to the public.

VCU Recreational Sports is offering a hip-hop class that incorporates beginner to intermediate techniques to help develop rhythm, coordination and musicality in a stress-free environment.
