Whitney Hubbs Artist Talk at ICA

The VCUarts Department of Photo and Film will present a talk by the photographer Whitney Hubbs at the ICA. Hubbs has participated in group exhibitions at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Gallery Luisotti and Shulamit Nazarian Gallery in Los Angeles and is represented by M+B Gallery in Los Angeles and Situations Gallery in New York. Wednesdays in the Workshop Accessibility Series: Video Capturing and Captioning
Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
As universities respond to accessibility issues in teaching, adding captions to instructional videos and online courses is a priority. This workshop covers the basics of planning, creating, captioning and uploading video content that serves hearing-impaired users. The principles of Universal Design for Learning will be discussed. VCU requires captioning for all published videos. The workshop will be held in the workshop, lower level, James Branch Cabell Library, 901 Park Ave.

'Decolonizing Service-Learning: Guidelines for Working with Indigenous Communities'

Highland Support Project at VCU will present Ben Blevins for the first talk of the group's speaker series. He will discuss his 25 years of work with indigenous communities in the Americas and will speak about the importance of not fostering dependency or having harmful impacts through service-learning experiences. ICA Talk: Marcus Fisher
Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Sound artist Marcus Fischer will discuss installation and sound composition at the ICA with a focus on his work in the 2019 Whitney Biennial. His talk will be followed by an improvised performance using analog and digital processes. Fischer is a musician and interdisciplinary artist based in Portland, Ore., whose work centers around memory, geography and the manipulation of physical audio-recording mediums. He builds soundscapes from recordings, found objects and chance, along with tape loops and live instruments. The event will be at the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St.

Jazz 4 Justice Benefit Concert

VCU Department of Music presents Jazz 4 Justice in the Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall, W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, 922 Park Ave. VCU Jazz Orchestras I & II, Commonwealth Singers and vocalist Shy Hinnant will perform. Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Colette McEachin will serve as guest conductor. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Student tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Cartoonist Keith Knight Takes on Racial Illiteracy

Award-winning cartoonist Keith Knight returns to VCU Libraries to present "Red, White, Black and Blue," a cartoon slideshow that tackles racial illiteracy in America. The Black History Month event will be in Room 303, James Branch Cabell Library, 901 Park Ave. A public reception will follow the presentation. Knight is an award-winning author of the comic strips "The Knight Life,"(th)ink" and "The K Chronicles." His work can be seen in The Nib, The Washington Post and The San Francisco Chronicle. He is developing a show for Hulu based on his comic strips.

Dissertation Study for Romantic Couples
This two-hour dissertation study explores how the brain works with people who are in romantic relationships. This study is conducted through VCU Department of Psychology. VCU Seeking Research Volunteers Who Drink Alcohol
Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies is seeking volunteers aged 21-55 to participate in research studying the brain’s reaction to alcohol. Eligible participants will be paid $150 for every test day (three test days) and additional compensation for each clinic visit. Principal investigator is Albert Arias, M.D., MS.
