Free Showing of 'Sustainable'
Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Center for Environmental Studies, part of VCU Life Sciences, will host a free viewing of the film “Sustainable” as part of the 10th annual RVA Environmental Film Festival. “Sustainable” investigates the economic and environmental instability of America’s food system through the lenses of soil loss, water depletion, climate change and pesticide use. After the film, John Jones, M.P.A., Ph.D., from VCU’s Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry and Innovation (iCubed) will facilitate a panel discussion about the film’s themes with scholars and food systems practitioners in the greater Richmond region. Cartoonist Keith Knight Takes on Racial Illiteracy
Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Award-winning cartoonist Keith Knight returns to VCU Libraries to present "Red, White, Black and Blue," a cartoon slideshow that tackles racial illiteracy in America. The Black History Month event will be in Room 303, James Branch Cabell Library, 901 Park Ave. A public reception will follow the presentation. Knight is an award-winning author of the comic strips "The Knight Life,"(th)ink" and "The K Chronicles." His work can be seen in The Nib, The Washington Post and The San Francisco Chronicle. He is developing a show for Hulu based on his comic strips.

ICA Cinema: Tracie Morris

The ICA will host a special Valentine screening of poet and artist Tracie Morris’s "Eyes Wide Shut: A Not-Neo Benshi Read" (2016), a recontextualization of Stanley Kubrick film "Eyes Wide Shut." Combining poetry with research conducted at Kubrick’s London archives, Morris dubs over the entirety of Kubrick’s film to present a commentary on race, sexuality and gender. The film, to be screened at the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St., contains adult content that may be inappropriate for some audiences.

Iyapo Repository Workshop at ICA

Members of the Iyapo Repository, an afrofuturist archive, will lead a public workshop at the ICA. Iyapo Repository is a resource library that houses a collection of digital and physical artifacts created to affirm and project the future of people of African descent. The repository is named for Lilith Iyapo, a black woman in Octavia Butler’s book series “Lilith’s Brood.” Members of the group archive manuscripts, films, drawings, rare media and more. PLAY Research Program
The Play and Learning Across a Year Research Program in VCU’s Physical Therapy Department is seeking to recruit children. Participation in the study would include recording a one-hour session of in-home observation of the infant moving, playing and interacting with their environment, followed by questionnaires to better understand the child’s development. Parents will be provided a $50 compensation at the end of the visit. To be eligible to participate, the child must be 12, 18 or 24 months (plus or minus one week).
