Film Screening: 'The Power to Heal: Medicare and the Civil Rights Revolution'

VCU Libraries and University Student Commons and Activities will host a screening of "The Power to Heal: Medicare and the Civil Rights Revolution." The documentary will be shown in the Court End Ballroom, Jonah L. Larrick Student Center, 900 Turpin St. The film, which details the struggle to secure equal and adequate access to health care for all Americans, will be followed by a discussion led by Sheryl Garland, Chief of Health Impact, VCU Health. A first-come, first-served buffet dinner will be provided.

'Be My Bloody Valentine': Buy One, Get One Tickets to 'MACHINAL'

VCUarts Theatre presents a "Be My Bloody Valentine" special. Two-for-one tickets will be available for "MACHINAL" for Valentine's weekend shows - Feb. 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. "MACHINAL" is loosely based on the true story of a Queens housewife accused of murdering her husband in 1927. Playwright Sophie Treadwell digs beneath the surface to explore a woman at the center of a crime — her emotions, life story, desires ... and what makes her break. In VCU Libraries' ongoing series, Dianne V. Pawluk, associate professor and Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Coordinator, Department of Biomedical Engineering, and grad students Bryson Josiah Goolsby and Hyun Woo Kim will present. Assistive technologies are often thought of as devices that support people with disabilities. But some useful tools, such as the autofocus camera, speech-to-text and even the potato peeler came from the development of assistive technologies. This session, in the Workshop, lower level, James Branch Cabell Library, 901 Park Ave., is a crash course on design methods.

Implicit Bias in Health Care

This IExcel Education seminar is designed to cultivate self-awareness of implicit bias in health sciences professionals and offer the opportunity to consider and practice strategies for mitigating bias. Participants will develop self-awareness of their own biases through the use and discussion of the Implicit Association Test and consider the impact of their bias on patient care. Questions to be addressed include the difference between Community Service and Enhanced Community Service Leave, buckets of leave, using leave in increments, using leave to volunteer at a favorite nonprofit organization and department members using leave together as a group. Pedestrian Detour Around Franklin Street Gym
The STEM Building project has begun at the site of the Franklin Street Gym. Fencing will be installed in stages. The first stage will be the alley behind the building. The fencing will extend from Johnson Hall to Shafer Court Dining Center and Ritter-Hickok. The final stage of the fencing will block the sidewalk in front of the building. Pedestrians will not be able to walk down the alley from Shafer Street or between Ritter-Hickok and the Gym.

Black Women Sought To Participate in Study About Dealing With Racial Discrimination
VCU School of Medicine is looking for black women ages 18-25 with a BMI between 25-45 kg/m2 in the Richmond area who want to take part in a study designed to capture experiences of racial discrimination. HER Squared is a research study designed to provide the opportunity to reflect on various experiences with racism and how you deal with the experiences. Compensation is available for eligible participants.
