21st-Century Impact of Cancer Care

The last half-century has seen a wide range of cutting-edge advancements in cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Join Robert Winn, M.D., director of VCU's Massey Cancer Center, as he discusses the impact of the nation's cancer centers in advancing scientific discoveries into new standards of care and what's on the horizon for cancer research and care in the 21st century. The talk will be at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave.

ICA Cinema: 'Amazing Grace'
Wednesday, Mar. 11, 2020 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
"Amazing Grace," a concert film starring Aretha Franklin, will be screened at the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St. Accompanied by the Rev. James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir, Franklin recorded the album over two days in January 1972 at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Producer Alan Elliott has compiled footage from the performance for the film.

Grand Rounds Presenting Alumnus Tadataka Yamada, M.D.

VCU Departments of Surgery and Internal Medicine are partnering to present an Interdepartmental Grand Rounds featuring Tadataka Yamada, M.D., who completed residency training on the MCV Campus in 1974. Yamada will speak in Room 1-044, Sanger Hall, 1101 E. Marshall St. A breakfast reception will follow. Yamada will also present at the Inaugural Gabriel Makhlouf, M.D., Ph.D., Grand Rounds from noon-1 p.m. March 12 in Room 2/3-200, James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Medical Education Center, 1201 E. Marshall St. A reception will precede the lecture at 11:30 a.m.

'ACT and TriNetX: Cohort Discovery Platforms to Explore and Validate Feasibility for Clinical Studies'

VCU C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research and Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences will present a lunchtime seminar. Tim Aro and Patrick Shi of the Wright Center will discuss HIPAA-compliant cohort discovery platforms, which help researchers evaluate potential research populations, answer research questions with deidentified data and develop collaborations across institutions. Lowenthal Symposium on Neurodegenerative Diseases

VCU School of Pharmacy presents the 2020 Lowenthal Symposium on neurodegerative diseases featuring keynote speaker Bruce Beutler, M.D., recipient of the Nobel Prize in 2011, and four other world-renowned researchers into disorders such as Alzheimers, Parkinson's and prion diseases. 16th Annual Women's Health Research Day

Women’s Health Research Day is a celebration and promotion of research activities in the Institute for Women's Health at VCU. The program will include a plenary symposium, poster awards and reception highlighting women’s health research by VCU faculty and students. Calling All Artists for Take Back the Night
The Advocacy Program through University Counseling Services calls all artists to submit a piece for an art display which honors survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Take Back the Night will be held from 6-8 p.m. on April 28. The event provides a place to speak out and build community. Any medium of art is welcome; ideas for pieces will be considered until April 1. Working drafts are due by April 10. Submit art ideas at the following URL.

Donations Needed for Clothing Closet
Episcopal Campus Ministry in association with Red Door Ministry at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is in need of gently used men's clothing. Each week students and community members come together to feed hungry, pray for the sick and provide for basic needs. Clothing can be dropped off at the church, 8 N. Laurel St., between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
