VCU's Department of English will host a free, online English Faculty Forum talk by Matteo Pangallo, assistant professor. Throughout late medieval and early modern periods, foreign musicians, actors, dancers and other performers made England a destination for touring, cultural diplomacy and immigration. Performers reveal that Europe and England was a linked space where cultural development occurred not just through textual borrowing or artistic influence but also through frequent physical movements of performers across borders. Innovation and Application: Julius Watkins and the Jazz French Horn Genre

Julius Watkins, the first prominent jazz French horn player and arguably the first professional African American French horn player in America, has received little attention from music scholars, jazz artists and other performers of his instrument. This lecture by Patrick Smith, interim assistant chair, Department of Music, is part of the VCU Faculty Lecture Series. Smith will document Watkins' life story in biographical form, determine his innovative methodologies for breaking down stereotypical barriers related to racial and instrument “norms” and explore the development of the jazz French horn.

Visiting Scholar Research Presentation: NASH and Macrophage Depletion

NASH is an epidemic liver disease characterized by hepatic inflammation and progressive fibrosis, affecting nearly 16 million Americans today.
