In a world of changing norms and ever-present glass ceilings to break, female leaders will discuss the question - what does being a woman in business mean today? Hear their personal journeys, how they serve as mentors and the role of identity at work. Innovation and Application: Julius Watkins and the Jazz French Horn Genre
Tuesday, Apr. 6, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Julius Watkins, the first prominent jazz French horn player and arguably the first professional African American French horn player in America, has received little attention from music scholars, jazz artists and other performers of his instrument. This lecture by Patrick Smith, interim assistant chair, Department of Music, is part of the VCU Faculty Lecture Series. Smith will document Watkins' life story in biographical form, determine his innovative methodologies for breaking down stereotypical barriers related to racial and instrument “norms” and explore the development of the jazz French horn.

VCU Publishing is seeking contributions for a curated, open-access anthology that imagines and explores futures for Richmond through an Afrofuturist lens. VCU Publishing, part of VCU Libraries, seeks Afrofuturist works from diverse authors — both academic and community members — as well as diverse disciplines and perspectives. Submissions can include multimedia, poetry, essays, fiction, scholarly pieces, art, comics or photography. The deadline is July 1.

Free Flu Vaccines: University Student Health Services
University Student Health Services offers free flu vaccines to all students on both campuses. The flu vaccine is safe, effective and does not cause the flu. All students are encouraged to get the flu vaccine, especially those at high risk for flu complications (people with asthma, diabetes or heart disease). Due to COVID-19, the flu vaccine is available by appointment only. Call the Monroe Park Campus clinic at (804) 827-8047 or MCV clinic at (804) 828-9220 to schedule an appointment.
