'Capitalism in the Economic Lives of Enslaved People'

Justene Hill Edwards, Ph.D., assistant professor, Corcoran Department of History, University of Virginia, will discuss her new book examining the economic lives of enslaved people and how they were affected by the capitalism of slavery. Why Does Ramanujan, 'The Man Who Knew Infinity,' Matter?
6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the most inspirational figures in the history of mathematics, was a gifted amateur mathematician from south India who left behind three notebooks that engineers, mathematicians and physicists continue to mine today. Ken Ono, D.O., Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics, University of Virginia, will discuss why Ramanujan matters today and share clips from the film, “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” which starred Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. Ono served as an associate producer and mathematical consultant for the film. The talk is part of VCU's Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Colloquium Series.

MFA Thesis Exhibition

The Anderson and VCUarts will present the 2021 MFA Thesis Exhibition, which will take place in two rounds: Round 1: April 9-April 23 and Round 2: April 30-May 15. The 2021 MFA Thesis Exhibition will feature 32 emerging artists and designers. Representing eight departments, research by the students pushes beyond traditional disciplines to shape what is next in visual and material culture.

'73 Cows' Documentary Screening

VCU First Destination Survey Is Live
The VCU First Destination Survey is live for May 2021 graduates on Handshake at VCU. Responses will help VCU to improve career and academic advising, student recruitment and student services. Prizes for completing the survey include AirPods, a Roku player, a robot vacuum, a VCU luggage set and Amazon gift cards. For six months after graduation, respondents will be able to review/change information and will remain eligible for prize drawings.

Hear My Voice: An Archive of Survivors' Stories
Hear My Voice, an archive of stories from survivors of sexual violence, is now accepting submissions. Hear My Voice submissions will displayed as an empowerment exhibition during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This exhibit will highlight strength and empowerment and provide a community of support. Submissions may take the form of a written reflection, poetry, painting, drawing, song, spoken reflection, video or audio file.

Women's Cardiovascular Research Study
Researchers in VCU's Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences are seeking female participants for a study investigating immune responses to high saturated fat meals. Ideal participants are female, nonsmoking, 18-30 years old and in good health. Individuals who do not currently engage in structured exercise are especially encouraged to participate. Benefits to participants: individualized analysis of laboratory assessments and chocolate pie for breakfast.
