'Valuing the Victims: A Comparative Framing Analysis of the Washington Post’s Coverage of Violent Attacks against Muslims and Non-Muslims'

VCU's Sociology Department and the Student-Faculty Engagement Committee will host a Media and Society Spring Guest Lecture by Mohammed el-Nawawy, Ph.D., (Queens University of Charlotte, N.C., and Media Studies Program-Doha Institute for Graduate Studies). He will present his research on The Washington Post's reporting of violent attacks and comparatively discuss how framing is done differently when the victims of such attacks are Muslims or non-Muslims. Slow Flow Yoga With Hannah
Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from noon to 12:30 p.m.
The pace is meditative, emphasizing peace and calm in body and mind and will include about half the number of poses included in a regular flow class. Poses are held longer; participants will take several breaths in each pose instead of moving to each breath. No equipment is required, but a yoga mat is recommended. As this historic semester comes to a conclusion, Multimedia Teaching and Learning Librarian Oscar Keyes and poet/event specialist Gregory Kimbrell will lead a collaborative poetry activity using Google Docs that makes a great starter for meaningful conversations. Minimum Wage Increases
The minimum wage will increase to $9.50 an hour for employees in Virginia on May 1. For VCU, this change will become effective on May 1. Pay increases become effective during the April 25 to May 9 pay period and will be reflected in May 14 paycheck.

Broad Street Temporary Stops: Pulse and Routes 1A/B/C, 2A/B/C, 23x, 26x and 29x Affected
Until May 27, the Department of Public Works will close the eastbound Pulse Bus Only lane and the southern sidewalk of Broad Street from Eighth to Ninth streets during construction of the Virginia General Assembly Parking Garage. Riders on the Pulse, Routes 1A/B/C Southbound, 2A/B/C Southbound, 23x, 26x, and 29x will be affected and will have to use alternate stops. Pulse riders using Government Center East must use a temporary bus stop located at Broad/Seventh.

Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
Va-LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) is recruiting its next cohort of trainees. The program, created to improve the health and lives of children and adults with disabilities and their family members, helps people share ideas and learn leadership skills. Trainees complete classes, clinical observations, policy activities and a family mentorship experience. Over the course of the program, trainees work on a leadership project which they present at the end of the program. Trainees complete 150 or 300 hours of content.
