The Black-Centered Origins of Juneteenth

Add to calendar 17-06-2021 12:00:00 17-06-2021 America/New_York The Black-Centered Origins of Juneteenth For many non-Black folks, Juneteenth seemed to burst into the national consciousness over the last few years. But Juneteenth, a celebration of the emancipation of enslaved people in the South, has been a day of celebration for generations for many Black folks. For this lecture, join A.J. Musewe, director of interactive history at Common Power, Seattle, Wash., in looking at the factors that led to the proclamation made on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas. Take a look at the players who worked to prevent the freedom of millions of enslaved folks and examples of Black folks being active participants in their liberation. This event is sponsored by VCU's Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and The Commons. Questions: Email Tiana Ingram at ingramtd@vcu.edu. Register at the following URL.
