For many non-Black folks, Juneteenth seemed to burst into the national consciousness over the last few years. But Juneteenth, a celebration of the emancipation of enslaved people in the South, has been a day of celebration for generations for many Black folks. For this lecture, join A.J. Musewe, director of interactive history at Common Power, Seattle, Wash., in looking at the factors that led to the proclamation made on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas. Take a look at the players who worked to prevent the freedom of millions of enslaved folks and examples of Black folks being active participants in their liberation. VCU Alumni will host an urban garden container workshop featuring alumna Alex Little of Green Heron Garden Co. The workshop will be held in person with a virtual option if you prefer to participate in your garden. Learn more about planting seeds and transferring plants into containers to make your outdoor space more green. The virtual experience will be a live video feed of the in-person experience. The virtual experience is free, but you will need to purchase the items referenced. After you register, a supplies list will be shared with you. Limited spaces are available for the in-person event.
