Humor in a Time of War: Student Comedy in Russia and Ukraine

Add to calendar 23-03-2026 12:00:00 23-03-2026 13:00:00 America/New_York Humor in a Time of War: Student Comedy in Russia and Ukraine "Leagues of Laughter: War, Comedy and the Soviet Legacy in Russia and Ukraine" (University College London Press, 2025) outlines how Soviet censorship, the fall of the USSR and war have changed student comedy in the region. Millions of students across the former Soviet Union compete in team comedy leagues, and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself gained fame through the activity. Before his election to the presidency in 2019, Zelenskyy had no political experience, made few campaign appearances and announced his candidacy only four months before the elections – and he won in a landslide. Zelenskyy didn’t have to campaign because everyone already knew who he was. This comedy game, called KVN (Klub veselykh i nakhodchivykh, or Club of the Cheerful and Clever), became a sensation in universities across the USSR in the 1960s, and it remained entrenched in educational establishments even after the fall of the Soviet Union. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Russia and Ukraine between 2015 and 2019, Austin Garey examines how international pressures and locally held values interacted to reproduce comedy tradition in two nation states on divergent post-Soviet trajectories. A series of interconnected, cross-border stories spanning 60 years illustrates how laughter and oppression entwined in the long cultural context of the war in Ukraine. Register for the virtual event at the following URL. Virtual Ellie Musgrave musgraveec@vcu.edu DD/MM/YYYY

Spotlight on National Brain Injury Awareness Month: Participants Sought for the VCU HERO Study

March marks National Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by individuals living with the long-term effects of brain injury and the continued need for innovative research to support their recovery. In recognition of this, the VCU HERO Study is currently enrolling veterans and active-duty service members to help researchers better understand how Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback may support recovery from persistent symptoms after concussion mild traumatic brain injury. The study involves noninvasive assessments and guided HRV biofeedback or educational sessions, conducted at the VCU Medical Center West Hospital, located at 1200 E. Broad St. Compensation is available for eligible participants. We are seeking individuals who meet the following criteria: You are a veteran or active-duty service member. (Civilians may become eligible in the future and can request placement on a wait list.) You experienced a mild traumatic brain injury (concussion) at least one year ago. You continue to experience ongoing symptoms from that injury (e.g., headaches, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue). You live within driving distance of Richmond. If you or someone in your network may be eligible, contact our study team at the following telephonenumber or email address.

Research Study: Understanding the Best Strategy for Estrogen Administration to Optimize Bone Health in Young Women With Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

VCU and the UVA Department of Pediatrics seeks young women to join a research study. If you are 14-30 years old and are low weight or have lost a lot of weight or exercise a lot and have irregular or absent menstrual periods, you may be eligible to join. Loss of menstrual periods from such causes is also called functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA). Girls and women with FHA are at risk for poor bone health and fracture because of many reasons, including having low levels of estrogen. We want to find out the best way to give two hormones, estrogen and progesterone, to improve bone health in young women with FHA. You will have four visits over 14 months that include: Physical examinations and questionnaires. Hormone, nutrition, eating habits, and exercise evaluation. DXA and HRpQCT scans to assess bone health. There are no costs to be part of the study. If you are interested in this study, please contact Andrea Marrs or Christine Burt Solorzano, M.D., at misralab@uvahealth.org. Compensation: Participants can receive up to $875 for finishing all study visits. Parking and travel costs are covered for up to $25 for each study visit. Contact: misralab@uvahealth.org
